Inspiration for Freedom 21-Apr-2007
“Aladdin: Let’s see, three wishes. I want them to be good… what would you wish for?
Genie: Me? No one’s ever asked me that before. Well, in my case… no, forget it.
Aladdin: What?
Genie: [sigh] Freedom.”
- from Disney’s Aladdin (1992)
The all-powerful genie could magic up just about anything its master could ever dream of. OK, granted - the genie wouldn’t have been able to make someone fall in love, bring someone back from the dead, or offer more than three wishes to it’s master, but it could do ANYTHING else.
Of all the things the genie could ever command, it desired just one thing… freedom.
The genie was destined to spend eternity, living out of a tiny magic lamp, at the beck and call of any master who would happen to find the lamp. There was only one way the genie could have got freedom - if it’s master offered one of his wishes to set it free.
That’s the difference between the genie and you. Although both of you have within you the power and determination to orchestrate whatever you want, the genie is still dependant on it’s master to set it free, whereas the only person who is responsible for your freedom is…. you guessed it - YOU!
