“Totaphobia, a fear of absolutely everything.”

Can you imagine what it’s like to be scared of absolutely anything and everything? How mad is it to get scared when the sun sets and darkness fills your world? How silly is it to get upset when the snow melts? How ridiculous is it to break down when your mother dies, knowing full well that no-one lives forever.

What is this thing that we know as fear? Is it that we fear having something, or is it that we fear NOT having it? Is it that we fear the car crash, or is it that we fear the loss of mobility when faced with a car crash?

Come off it! What are you desperately trying to hold onto it for? Do you really think it’s going to last forever?

I’ve found fear is the result of a lack of understanding and usually passed on from parent to child. I meet so many families where the same fears are felt by the parents and their children. If one faces their fear and strives to understand it, it will no longer remain a fear. As a great man once said, “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”.

I agree that our own lives would be easier if we could overcome fear, especially fear of the unknown. On the flip side, just as “pain” can have an advantage e.g. a young child who doesn’t know whats harmful for him will not go and touch a hot saucepan again if he has been burnt once – the fear of pain can actually help us from injuring ourselves.
